Calistoga

Home watch at the warm, northern end of the valley

Empty summers, hillside edges, and a plain account of what we will and will not do when the county is thinking about fire.

Calistoga is the warm end of Napa Valley, and a good many of its second homes are empty through the same months the hills are dry. That coincidence is the reason to talk about wildfire directly, and the reason not to dress it up. We look after houses. We do not fight fires, cut lines, or drive toward a column of smoke.

A hot week in a closed house

The walk-through still begins with the ordinary systems, because heat is when they announce a change. HVAC left in the state you chose for an empty month, or not. A refrigerator. A water heater in a room that gets very warm. We know the baseline because we set it with you at the consultation, and the report says whether today matched it. The visit itself is the same discipline we use in town: rooms, plumbing, exterior, photographs. The weather does not invent a new service. It changes what “obvious” includes.

The edge of the property

Lots nearer open land, and lots on a slope, deserve a look at the perimeter. Debris against a wall. A gutter holding leaves. A gate you care about. An approach a person could actually use. We photograph those points. If you want vegetation cut or gutters cleared, that is a vendor you select. Meeting them is concierge time at the published hourly rate. We will not hire in your name, and we will not describe a visual check as a fuel-reduction contract.

If an evacuation order covers the house, we respond: we look when conditions and your instructions allow, we document what we could see, and we tell you. We do not override an order. There is no promised minute on that sentence. The wildfire page is the full version, written to be read before the season rather than during it.

Weekends you are here

People come to Calistoga to be in Calistoga. Send the dates. Scheduled walk-throughs pause while you are in residence, and home watch is not billed for those days. When you leave, the cadence resumes. If you want the house aired and ready the afternoon before you arrive, ask. It is one of the better uses of an hour.

The monthly plan is not a distance fee

Weekly is $350 and twice monthly is $250 for a house up to 3,000 square feet, the same figures as in Napa. A larger house is quoted after we walk it. The $10 fuel surcharge applies to a trip that is not already on your schedule, not to the fact of a Calistoga address. The rate card spells the rest out, including after-hours or urgent visits at $100 an hour, billed in 15-minute increments.

St. Helena is the neighboring conversation, more trees and older houses than hillside edge. It is written separately so this page can stay about heat, the perimeter, and the weeks you are gone.

Tell us about the house, not the postcard

A consultation at the property is how we learn what a visit there should notice.
